Hong Kong's Mexican restaurants are mostly on Hong Kong Island, in Central, SoHo, Sheung Wan, Sai Ying Pun, Kennedy Town and Wan Chai, with a couple in Tsim Sha Tsui and one on Lamma Island. They are mainly lively taquerias and cantinas that suit after-work drinks and weekend brunch.
In SoHo, Chicano on Gough Street cooks family recipes such as chicken mole, Uncle Miguel on Peel Street has Taco Tuesday deals, and Santa Monica Cantina and XOCO sit by the Mid-Levels escalator. El Chapo on Hollywood Road serves breakfast burritos from 10am, El Macho in Sai Ying Pun has Día de los Muertos murals, and Tequila on Davis in Kennedy Town has a 100% agave tequila list. In Wan Chai, El Taquero carves al pastor from the trompo and El Gordo does two-for-one tacos on Tuesdays. In Tsim Sha Tsui, 8Five2 Restobar serves until 2am and Caliente has a terrace on Knutsford Terrace. Gangstas on Lamma serves tortas.
Most are mid-range; El Gordo and Gangstas are casual. Book ahead for weekend nights.
