Fuego Mesa sits beneath an HDB block on Race Course Road, a couple of minutes from Farrer Park MRT. It was opened by childhood friends Andre and Gerald, first-time restaurateurs, with Chef Ratt from Rayong in Thailand running the kitchen. The room is bright and loud, with murals of luchadors, skulls and a large 'Mi casa es su casa' wall.
The beer-battered fish tacos, served on blue and purple corn tortillas, are the dish reviewers return to. Birria beef tacos come with consommé for dipping, and the Tomyum de Fuego quesadilla nods to the chef's Thai roots. There are also chipotle chicken quesadillas, beef carnitas rice bowls and chicken wings with a habanero-based hot sauce, plus agua frescas such as blueberry tamarind.
Portions are generous and prices fair, which makes it a good casual lunch or dinner in Little India and Farrer Park. It opens daily from 10am to 3.30pm and 5.30pm to 10pm, and accepts CDC vouchers.
