El Macho occupies a corner at 1 Third Street in Sai Ying Pun, its façade painted in bright murals and the room inside decorated with sugar skulls, sarapes and sombreros hung from the ceiling. It belongs to Bistro Concept, the group behind Flying Pig and Lobster Shack on nearby High Street, and Localiiz has described it as a social enterprise restaurant.
Foodie calls the cooking more Tex-Mex than strictly Mexican. The menu runs to sizzling fajitas with fish, chicken or Angus beef, burritos such as the Dirty Sanchez with pork carnitas, and tacos filled with carne asada, chicken or carnitas. Nachos Guapo is the house sharing plate, and the banana Nutella chimichanga is a popular finish, with frozen and classic margaritas to drink.
It works for after-work drinks or a lively group dinner, and there is a weekday set lunch and a weekend brunch. Bookings are taken online through Bistrochat. This is the brand's only branch.
