El Taquero opened on Queen's Road East in Wan Chai in autumn 2023 and quickly became one of the most talked-about Mexican restaurants in Hong Kong. The open kitchen is built around the trompo, the vertical spit on which marinated pork for al pastor is slow-cooked and sliced to order.
The Al Pastor Experience is the dish to share: carved pork served with freshly made corn tortillas, which the kitchen makes in-house, and the traditional trimmings for building your own tacos. Add the tortilla chips with five house-made salsas, tamales and elotes preparados. For something more adventurous, try the nopales, made with cactus, or guacamole topped with chapulines, which are grasshoppers. Chicken enchiladas in salsa verde cover heartier appetites.
The bar pours a wide range of tequilas and mezcals, and the hibiscus margarita is a favourite. With its lively room and sharing format, it suits groups and celebrations. It is open for lunch and dinner every day and stays open until midnight from Thursday to Saturday.
