ORIGEN opened on Jalan Pantai Pererenan in April 2024, set up by Mexican co-owners Alvaro Rosales Machado, formerly of Mexicola, and Casandra Escamilla Frutos. The dining room borrows from colonial Mexico, with exposed brick, earthenware and a logo that nods to Quetzalcóatl. The team works with local producers and fishermen and grew Bali's first batch of Mexican jalapeños and habaneros.
Tortillas, tostadas and corn chips are made by hand from locally grown Mexican corn and cooked on clay comales, and they are gluten-free. Start with the tostada de atún and ceviche mexicano, then move on to quesabirria tacos, tacos al pastor or cochinita pibil. Larger plates include mole madre and pescado a la veracruzana, and churros close the meal. The mezcal bar, added in June 2024, stocks ten agave species, alongside margaritas, palomas and micheladas.
It suits a dinner date or a relaxed weekend lunch. Weekday service starts at 4pm, and Honeycombers reports two-for-one margaritas from 5pm to 7pm daily.
