La Luz is an open-air restaurant and community space in Penestanan, west of central Ubud. It has a warm, artsy feel and looks out over rice fields. Upstairs there is a performance space and cinema area that hosts improv theatre, a film club and a monthly poetry and music evening, and the motto is 'Somos Luz', or 'we are light'.
The kitchen describes its food as Mexican soul food with a Balinese twist. Tacos come singly or in threes on flour tortillas, with corn or coconut tortillas available. Options include carne asada, Baja prawn, battered local tuna and a tuna aguachile on a crisp corn base. The signature vegetarian taco is a mushroom rendang topped with roasted pineapple. There are also fajita burritos and quesadillas, coconut ceviche and nachos. Breakfast runs from 7.30am, and a recent Google reviewer recommends the chicken chilaquiles.
It suits families, solo travellers and remote workers, with free wi-fi, charging points and a welcome for children and pets. Vegan options are plentiful. Book by WhatsApp.
