La Cuna is the rebranded The Mexican in Town, one of Kuta's longest-standing Mexican kitchens. Diners enter a dimly lit courtyard strung with fairy lights, with wooden tables, reggaeton on the speakers and clay pots and candles setting the tone after dark.
The cooking draws on Meso-American roots with local, mostly organic produce and plenty of plant-based and gluten-free options. Order the Baja fish tacos, tuna tataki tacos, tuna tostada and the jackfruit burrito or chimichanga; chilaquiles verdes and mahi ceviche also earn praise. Margaritas, sangria and a Bintang michelada lead the crafted cocktail list.
It is a good pick for couples and for vegetarians or vegans travelling with meat-eaters. It opens for dinner only, from 5pm with last orders at 9.45pm, and runs weekly specials such as Wednesday sangria deals and a tapas-style menu. Bookings, takeaway and delivery are handled by WhatsApp.
