Piedra Negra occupies a corner shophouse where Haji Lane meets Beach Road, and it is hard to miss: the walls are covered in colourful murals, strings of lights hang over the arched doorway and tables spill out onto the street. It is run by the Blu Jaz group, the people behind the neighbouring live-music bar, and has been part of the Kampong Glam nightlife scene for years.
Guacamole is made at the table in a stone molcajete and served with tortilla chips. The pulled beef burrito comes with waffle fries, and there are Baja-style tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas, sopa de tortilla and a traditional ceviche. Frozen or shaken margaritas are the default drink, also available by the jug.
It suits groups starting a night out around Arab Street and Haji Lane. Happy hour runs from noon to 8pm with deals on beers and cocktails, and the kitchen stays open until late, every day of the week. Prices are modest for the area, and outdoor tables are the ones to aim for once the lane lights up.
