Malaysia's Mexican scene is centred on the Klang Valley, where a group of taquerias and cantinas has grown up in Kuala Lumpur and neighbouring Petaling Jaya and Sunway. Several began as food trucks, and at least one folds Malaysian flavours into its tacos.
The guide covers Kuala Lumpur. Highlights include Poblano KL, a family-run Mexican and Latin American restaurant in the restored 1919 Old Malaya building, and La Chica Mexican Grill, a tequila bar on Jalan Bangkung in Bangsar with a free-flow Taco Tuesday. Undisclosed Location in SS4 puts Malacca asam fish and varuval chicken into tacos, and Tina's Taqueria at The Five is the permanent home of the Curbside Cantina taco truck.
Most places are casual and inexpensive. Halal options are limited: Undisclosed Location is pork-free, while Comprendes, Mendes? builds its menu around pork, and most others have unconfirmed status. Check with the restaurant directly if that matters to you.
