Indonesia's Mexican dining is spread across three very different places: Bali, where cantinas and taquerias cater to holidaymakers and long-stay residents; Jakarta, where Mexican food sits within a busy restaurant scene in the southern districts and business areas; and Kuta on Lombok, a smaller surf town with a couple of good options.
Bali is split into four areas: Seminyak and Kerobokan, Canggu and Pererenan, Uluwatu, Nusa Dua and Sanur, and Ubud. Highlights include Motel Mexicola in Seminyak, open since 2013, ORIGEN in Pererenan with its mezcal bar, and Lolita's Cantina Mexicana above the Suluban surf break. In Jakarta, Amigos Bar & Cantina has been running since 1979, and Carbón cooks over live fire on the 11th floor of MD Place. In Lombok, La Cuna serves fish tacos in a candlelit courtyard in Kuta.
Halal options are scarce; Chileco Mexican Grill in Jakarta is pork-free, but most places serve pork. Book ahead for weekend evenings in Seminyak, Canggu and South Jakarta.
